New Mekong Cycling Routes: August 2015

Nakhon Phanom is a northeastern border province situated on the banks of the Mekong river with several crossing points points to Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic (Laos) en route Ban Phanom District down to That Phanom.  The border region is renowed its fertility, gorgeous sceneries, multi-culture centuries-long historical heritage, and the national landmark Phra That Phanom sacred precinct, as well.

On August 16th, 2015, the provincial office will be organizing the “Bike For Mom” event, a cycling parade in honor of Her Majesty the Queen’s auspicious occasion of her 83rd birthday, scheduled to take place simultaneously throughout Thailand, to promote health and tourism, as well as inaugurate the cycling routes along the Mekong.  Nakhon Phanom City Hall will be the starting point, en route through Mekong river skirts, to the 3rd Thai-Loa Friendship Bridge, all of which cyclists will be able to appreciate spectacular views from both sides of the river, historical sites and major attractions such as the Vietnam Memorial Clock Tower, Mahathat Temple, Okat Temple where Phra Tio is enshrined, and Phra Tium, a Nakhon Phanom landmark and much revered Buddha image in, among others.

With such, the local administration plans to develop district landscapes along the Mekong border, build cycling paths that linkup to Nakhon Phanom’s town center, promote trade and tourism, and transform Nakhon Phanom into a special economic zone, in accordance with government policy that puts emphasis on implementing “border trade and logistics services” in order to become a regional hub for trade and investment and become Isarn’s (Northeast region) major gateway to the Indochina economic zone in the close foreseeable future.
