Logistics Technologies Coming On Strong in 2017

Today’s rapidly advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytic, and many others, are all bound to have a strong impact on logistics industry.  For instance, we did not use to be able to track our purchase orders to find out the current status of delivery covering the where and when of goods to be delivered.   But, thanks of modern technologies, all data are linked such that we are now able to know real time status of goods.  Besides, autonomous vehicles, delivery drones and various autonomous robotic systems are playing a bigger role in today’s business world.  Let’s explore the interesting trends for 2017.

1. A more extensive application of IoT, RFID and AIDC

1.1) IoT : So far, IoT has been applied for use to a certain extent although for the most part this has been in the areas of customer communication and confidence enhancement in the context of transport and delivery of goods via data links from different sources so as to boost delivery effectiveness and reduce damage caused by machinery malfunction as well as complicated work process.  In the past year(s), IoT was expected to play a bigger role in delivery process, for example, in linking IoT with other technologies, be they Bluetooth, RFID or AIDC, in an effort to locate weaknesses that need to be tackled in order to improve as well as simplify the delivery process for the purpose of tracking the temperature of delivery itself, among others.

1.2) RFID (Radio Frequency Identification): RFID is a censoring device for logistics purposed used by logistics service providers.  At the initial stage, RFID incurs rather high installation cost which gradually decreases in the past few years, making it more and more within reach on the part of business operators.  Experts have thus predicted that more logistics companies will resort to the application of RFID, for instance in warehouses to enhance inventory management and, in turn, determine the most appropriate delivery as well as accurate and clear-cut quantity, or to ensure a more accurate tracking of merchandise being delivered.

1.3) AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture): The AIDC application in logistics industry derived from the adoption of Bluetooth and RFID thereby enabling the autonomous updating of varied transport and delivery status through handheld and automatic scanners and, in turn, enhancing our real-time data access covering, for instance, location, estimated length of time for delivery and other useful information.

2. A more extensive application of Bluetooth Technology

Despite the distinct role of IoT in logistics industry, many companies have been found to be more interested in Bluetooth due to the fact that the technology is neither capital- nor energy-intensive and the small sized device does enhance delivery tracking.  It is expected that Bluetooth will play a more significant role at every level of the logistics industry (ranging from delivery process to documentation).  As such, one has to admit that the device is most convenient in the context of development of the tracking process, accuracy in delivery and length of time required.  Not only will these factors prove to enhance work proficiency but they will also – in the final analysis – increase customer satisfaction.

3. Solution for e-Commerce

Online- or e-Commerce is to become a B2C type of business having direct bearing on logistics industry due to the fact that logistics industry/business requires database from various sources in analyzing service efficiency as well as status tracking of delivery in transit, factors essential for e-Commerce as these help enhance the process of data collection and analysis as regards convenience, speediness, effectiveness, cost reduction and, more importantly, customer satisfaction increase.  Thus, e-commerce is bound to become business opportunity for future logistics industry.   Living in an age where speediness applies to everything and technologies are rapidly making progress, we are compelled to resort to the on-line platform and apply it to our businesses if we aim to retain the customer base while simultaneously improving our work efficiency.

Therefore, lacking the ability to invest in logistics process, businesses must give priority to locating experienced logistics service providers with growth potentials.  As customer, everyone certainly expects top quality services with the most suitable or reasonable cost-effectiveness.  At any rate, to locate a quality service provider who offers low prices is, indeed, no easy task.  Business operators should thus base their analyses on a variety of factors ranging from price, outcome and/or customer satisfaction, expertise to work efficiency along with many others in deciding which company has delivery speediness, accuracy and effective solutions that are most suitable for their products.
